SUCCESS STORY

Angelica, a Mexican immigrant, noticed that her seven-year-old son Michael was suffering from allergies and headaches. His asthma was also worsening. Michael’s doctor suggested tearing out the old carpet in the family’s apartment – the likely cause of his health problems. But when Angelica approached the building manager, he refused. Without the means to move to another apartment, Angelica and her children were stuck in a living situation that threatened their health. What could Angelica do to ensure the health of her family?

How Legal Aid Helped
As part of our Peninsula Family Advocacy Program, Michael’s doctor referred Angelica to Legal Aid to find a legal remedy to her family’s health problems.

  • As Angelica primarily speaks Spanish, Legal Aid matched her with a Spanish-speaking attorney who could best represent her interests.
  • The attorney represented Angelica and informed the building manager that the matter would be moved to the courts.
  • Threatened with legal action, the building manager immediately removed the carpet.

Today Michael’s health has improved greatly. He no longer suffers from headaches and allergies and happily plays in the family’s apartment.
