April 15, 2013 – Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County has named the law firm of Morrison & Foerster LLP, Howard Pollack and Dietra Prater Slack as this year’s award winners honoring their dedication to justice for all the children, families and seniors in San Mateo County. The awards were presented during a luncheon at The Four Seasons Hotel in East Palo Alto on April 12, 2013 where the audience enjoyed a keynote address from Kent Walker, General Counsel at Google.

July 28, 2011 - BURLINGAME - The California State Bar announced that Cotchett, Pitre, & McCarthy, LLP
is the recipient of one of the 2011 President’s Pro Bono Services Awards. The Cotchett, Pitre
& McCarthy, LLP Team, lead by Niki Okcu, is being recognized for providing pro bono
representation to an 89 year old elderly widow, Pauline Reade, who was bilked out of nearly
$600,000. Ms. Reade faced foreclosure on the Pacifica home she has lived in since 1951 after
Fetuu Tupoufutuna, a scam contractor, tricked her into signing loan documents in the sum of
hundreds of thousands of dollars with various banks and mortgage entities.

M. Stacey Hawver as Interim Executive Director to continue Legal Aid’s work following the departure
of Lauren Zorfas. Ms. Hawver, who served as Executive Director at Legal Aid for seven years and was a
staff attorney for ten years prior to that time, is well-known as an unfailing advocate on behalf of lowincome
residents in San Mateo County. Stacey has a profound understanding of Legal Aid and has
already started working alongside the Board of Directors and the senior management team as they lead
Legal Aid into the future.

April 30, 2010 - Once more Legal Aid’s annual luncheon was an outstanding success. Thanks to a hard-working Lunch Committee led by Co-Chairs Ellen Winick Stross and Lori Lutzker, and Chair Emeritus George Corey, close to $300,000 was raised to help provide legal services to low-income people in need in San Mateo County.

HART Collaborative to Help Older with Disabilities
December 18, 2009 - Legal Aid staff attorney Chris Douglas is collaborating with other Daly City nonprofits and agencies on HART, the Healthy Aging Response Team. This project seeks to improve access to social, health and other services for isolated adults age 50 and older as well as those with disabilities. By training their peers to answer questions over the phone, Douglas and organizers hope that the target group is able to get help in their own community with just one phone call. The project was launched in January and will operate out of the Doelger Senior Center in Daly City.

December 7, 2009 - Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County welcomes new Executive Director Lauren Zorfas, who will start on December 10, 2009. For the past seven years Ms. Zorfas has been the Supervising Attorney for the Family Law Facilitator’s Office and Self-Help Services at the San Mateo County Superior Court. She is a stalwart advocate for the legal rights of the underprivileged; in her position at the Court she expanded public services and built highly successful collaborative relationships with other organizations, agencies and community members.
